Ah, “more” may be true, but the energy needed to remove and concentrate the thorium is such that, I suspect most of that thorium energy would be used to get the thorium, because the concentration is still extremely low. IOW, you have to mine and remove the coal anyway – might as well burn it.

J. Paul Getty built an art museum in 1974. It’s in Malibu and is a copy of a Roman villa from Herculaneum that was buried in the famous Pompeii eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.

The villa, being modeled after an ancient Roman structure, but built to 1974 code, is reasonably fireproof — and its contents are generally pretty rugged. By contrast, the Getty Center is reputed to have every modern safeguard and may be impervious to natural phenomena (some say its collections can be made secure against an adjacent atomic bomb with six hours warning). The new Getty has been threatened by fire before, and it didn’t even muss its gardens.
So far, I’ve been hearing about the grounds of the Villa burning in the Palisades fire. That is not the Getty that has the Van Gogh in it.
Again, the most famous piece at the Villa is an ancient bronze. It would most likely shrug off smoke damage.

“Climate change is a hoax”. The president-elect has promised to practically wipe out federal climate, clean air, and clean water regulations. His administration’s plans aim at rules applying to everything from auto emissions to power plant pollution to drinking water standards. To those of us who care deeply for the natural world, these and similar statements and proposals by the president-elect are disheartening. But despair not.
Most Blue states have been ardent fighters in the battle against climate change deniers and air and water polluters. Their attorneys general and lawmakers are preparing to fight back by filing lawsuits, enacting their own regulations, and staffing up state environmental agencies.
In the first Trump administration, his agencies tried to roll back more than 100 environmental rules. The courts struck down many of those rollbacks after legal challenges.
Where and what will the anti-environmentalists attack first? Environmental advocates say the likeliest might be the EPA’s waivers that allow California to set its own limits, stricter than federal rules, for automotive emissions. Many other states, comprising 40% of the light-duty vehicle market, follow the California standards.
“[California] needs federal support on reducing transportation emissions, really centered on our waivers from the EPA,” said Ethan Elkind, director of the climate program at the Center for Law, Energy & the Environment at the UC Berkeley School of Law.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, said in an interview, “There’s a way for regulations to be created, and a way for them to be changed. If the law isn’t followed, as it often was not during the first Trump administration, we will sue, and as in the past, we will win.”
Of the roughly 120 lawsuits brought by California against the first Trump administration, 70 were environmental cases, Bonta said. The state won a majority of those cases.
The Wall Street Journal reecetntly wrote that etven some MAGA Republicans are unwilling to roll back significant portions of the Biden-era climate bill where it could negatively affect their constituencies’ economic interests.

I’m reading rock solid about 80% of 12G of RAM, and about 20% of 16G of swap. This is before I changed my swap to a different device and doubled it from 8G — because I’d frequently go 100% of RAM and 100% of swap and my system would semi-hang.
First impression — I gave it more swap, and now it doesn’t need as much as it previously used. WTF?
Second note — both Brave and Firefox pushed updates while I was dorking around. Would it not be ironic if they fixed (in software) the problem I was working to fix (in hardware)?
I’d previously diddled with “swappiness”. Ubuntu standard is 60 — I’d tried 40 and 80 and they both seemed to make my memory management worse. I’m continuing to watch the current setup, but it is not doing the pre-misbehaving I expect.
Just to make this comment interesting, here’s “Ride to Happiness” —
I’m not a code guy but my speculation is that there are lines of code commanding the performance of something and directing the use of a specific size allotment of RAM not located in the swap file. By changing the amount of RAM, you are changing the base address of the RAM which is somehow the root by which all commands are to be used in certain execution sub-schemes.

Brave implemented a “feature” where it tells you the memory usage of a tab when you hover over it (e.g. 662MB for youtube.com — lotsa thumbnails). That would be a total of “real memory” and swap, with the allocation between the two done by the kernel.

L.A. Officials Complain There Aren’t Enough Firefighters — After Firing Hundreds Who Refused to Take COVID Vaccine
As fires rage across Los Angeles, city officials are complaining there are not enough firefighters to manage the situation.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said that the department was incapable of managing such a massive natural disaster.
“There are not enough firefighters in all of Los Angeles County to address four separate fires of this magnitude,” he said.
“The LA County Fire Department was prepared for one or two major wildfires, but not the four. This is not a normal red flag alert.”
While their lack of manpower is completely understandable given the incredible ferocity of the fires, it is worth noting that many firefighters were fired for their refusal to take the COVID vaccine.
As pointed out by the popular End Wokeness account X, local news media even ran reports back in 2021 about how firefighters had their employment terminated after refusing to provide proof of vaccination or requesting an exemption.
In fact, a group of hundreds of the city’s firefighters even filed a lawsuit against the city for violating their constitutional rights.

Once our current meter dies, there are no more Non-Smart meters available. We pay $30 a month for the privilege of not having a SMART METER.
When the smart meters went on the electric and water, we weren’t given a choice. The gas company moved all the meters outside on the side of the houses, so they don’t have to come in or ask to go into back yards. Sneaky.
we had no choice with our electric meter–half a mile driveway up a mountain in bad weather was a no go for the meter reader.
The reading every month is GASLIGHTING BULL💩. We had the old style for a good ten years and it sent in the reading with no hands on.
Second, over 70 years ago, as an 8 yr old child, Hubby used to read the meter and send in the post card. ONCE A YEAR the meter reader would come around and check that the diagrams on the card were correct.
I remember those post cards too.
They looked something like this:
One time, when our gas meter was actually read, it turned out Mom was overpaying by quite a bit, and had an escrow account. There was enough in it for a new gas grill and no payments for a bit.
Same here, almost as long ago, too. PG&E and Reddy Kilowatt, back when they were actually good. We also got sort of a bonus for using more electricity, in the form of staggered rates (steeply downward)…
Now the rates are just staggering….

Being a liturgy nerd, I’m curious to how a Southern Baptist man is being buried out of an Episcopal church. They can out pomp us Catholics. So far, one difference, no Scripture readings. That can be a difficult decision, choosing the right ones for the person involved. Grandson currently giving a eulogy with a bit of Scripture in it.

The one grandson was charming with his talk. Otherwise, the eulogies were pretty nauseating. Gerald Ford and Fritz Mondale are both gone, but they wrote their eulogies before they died, so their sons gave them. Mondale’s was just over the top.
I like all the ceremony. I know it’s not popular, necessarily, but to each their own.

My next American Story gives the general delineation point IMO. In America from what I have found, the Church of England was generally who the loyalists stood with while the independence movement aligned with the Presbyterians and Catholics, primarily those who migrated from Ireland and Scotland. Around 1740 George Whitefield led the evangelical movement from the New Side of the Presbyterian Church. This was the Great Awakening period for Protestants in the mid 1700’s. Eventually the New and Old Side (order and tradition) reconciled around 1758.
Whitefield ended up Methodist and even ended up at odds with Methodist founders John and Charles Wesley because he was a Calvinist and they were Arminians. Methodists later embraced and merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church to become the UMC with two somewhat different Arminian belief systems that they never could quite get to balance out like the issues with New Side and Old Side Presbyterians. So, when the progressives began moving in to both UMC and Presbyterian they could not withstand the liberal attacks and eventually split.

My ancestor Shubal Stearns converted from Congregational to “New Light” Baptist after hearing George Whitefield evangelize.
He, his brother Peter (my direct line 7th gg-father), Daniel Marshall, and some others went to North Carolina and started a church there. They were enticed to the area by famous Quaker Herman Husband, so the story goes. The church grew really fast until the War of the Regulation, which caused so many members to flee (Husband wrote in favor of the Regulators, and Stearns may have), the church died off. Shubal Stearns died there a few years later.
Peter went further south into South Carolina while the NC church was still booming, and planted at least one church there. Daniel Marshall ended up in Georgia, where he started more churches. They were the beginnings of the Baptist Church system across the entire South.
I have studied this branch of my family for a while, as I’m sure you can tell!

At 4 minutes in…if Eric Dubay’s video “debunking” the final experiment (the video I posted on saturday) was persuasive, iyou are gullible. And indeed it is so… Dubay doesn’t even understand how shadows work.
I wouldn’t expect anyone to watch the whole thing, just the parts near the beginning. He spends most of the time having a conversation with a Flat Earther he had talked to before going on the trip; the Flat Earther (“Steve”) is rejecting what happened mostly on the grounds that Duffy didn’t call him that first night. Duffy tried calling the next midnight only to find his number had been blocked; Steve lies through his teeth about that.
I watched part of the Saturday video. That “Steve” guy was annoying, IMO. He never would concede a point even when his assertions were soundly disproved. And all the while he tried to appear polite while really talking too much, talking over people, and not giving credit where it was due.
Well—Central North Carolina is forecast to have a triple wallop storm starting tomorrow afternoon. Snow + freezing rain/sleet + ice until late Saturday morning. Duke Energy is already warning that there will be power outages. Yours Truly will be battening down the hatches for sure.

When we first saw this screenshot from PRIDE celebrating Los Angeles’s first LGBTQFHIJKLMNOP fire chief claiming lesbians ‘get it done’ we thought someone was being funny. Surely, not even PRIDE would be this tone-deaf and stupid.

Starting about 40 years ago, the Turkish-American economist Timur Kuran penned a series of articles that dramatically changed the way we, as a society, understand social conditions and social change. Kuran’s work dealt primarily with the twin concepts of knowledge falsification and preference falsification, which explain the rise and persistence of certain social conditions, and the related idea of a preference cascade, which explains the process of social change.
In brief, knowledge and preference falsification are what Kuran calls “special forms of lying,” i.e. “misrepresenting what you know and what you prefer” in order to maintain a specific social order and one’s place in it. These forms of lying constitute “an innate human response to the dangers of being ostracized, to being cut off from friendships and privileges that are critical to survival,” necessary because “We are born with a need for social acceptance.”
Translating that into a less complicated vernacular: people tend to lie about what they believe in public to avoid offending others or drawing unwanted scrutiny to themselves. People do this all the time, in great matters of supreme importance, as well as smaller matters that are seemingly irrelevant but that are, nevertheless, critical to the maintenance of social order.

In 1995, Kuran collected the thoughts from his series of articles and wrote an incredibly important and influential book called Private Truths, Public Lies: The Social Consequences of Preference Falsification. In it, he detailed three examples of how preference falsification enabled/enables the perpetuation of seriously distorted social conditions: the Indian caste system, American unanimity on the merit of affirmative action, and Communism in Eastern Europe.
By far, the most famous of these three is the persistence and then sudden collapse of Communism. For decades, the people of Eastern Europe falsified their public preferences about their governments, largely because they rightly feared the potential repercussions of doing otherwise. They put on brave, regime-supporting faces when around others, while privately detesting the regime. The “distortion” created was the ensuing perception that the Communist governments were stable and popular, that everyone loved them – because that’s what everyone said in public. The regime did part of the work of maintaining public order and obedience, but the people themselves did the lion’s share, convincing one another that they supported the regime, even as they secretly loathed it and even as it enjoyed practically no legitimacy at all.
Eventually, however, preference falsification gives way to reality. Something unexpected happens that shatters the false public façade. Something sparks the recognition among the general population that they are not alone, that others feel the same way they do, and that the consequences for acknowledging their feelings and preferences are nowhere near as severe as they had previously thought. This is the “preference cascade.” Once the spark signals to the masses that the false social support is teetering; once one person, then two people, then three people express publicly what they have long felt privately, the entire social structure collapses upon itself. One leads to two, which leads to three, which leads to a “cascade” of thousands upon thousands.
Ironically enough, the spark that undermined Soviet Communism may well have been the rise and reforms of Mikhail Gorbachev. He told the people of the Warsaw Pact that their governments weren’t working. He made clear that even he didn’t believe the false public preference. And eventually, the people gained enough confidence to agree with him.
I mention all of this today because the American business world appears poised on the precipice of a preference cascade. Unsurprisingly, the dynamics at work here very much mirror those at work in the collapse of Communism.
